    Description

"Line in front of the kitchen to recieve a portion of soup. Ghetto residents wore at first a band on the sleeve and later replaced it with the Star of David ("Jewish badge") that every Jew was required to wear on his upper garment, on his chest, and on his back. Violaters would pay with their life. (Source: Photo-caption from "Diary of a Youth in the Ghetto, Lodz 1942," a photo-essay featuring excerpts from the diary of a young person imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto alongside photos taken by Henryk Ross in the ghetto between 1940 and 1944. The photo-essay was published in Israel after 1958.)
