Description
"They brought bread for distribution. The wagon was harnessed to horses until the ghetto's gate. They - "volunteers" in rotations - would drag it from the gate to the distribution points. the photo was taken in 1940. As hunger increased, it was impossible to bring bread this way "voluntarily." (Source: Photo-caption from "Diary of a Youth in the Ghetto, Lodz 1942," a photo-essay featuring excerpts from the diary of a young person imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto alongside photos taken by Henryk Ross in the ghetto between 1940 and 1944.
